En él, Enrique Meneses Puertas, el padre del famoso fotógrafo, cuenta su peripecia cuando desde Francia, donde disfrutaba de una vida social intensa derrochando su fortuna, toma la decisión de alistarse en los Regulares de Melilla para enfrentarse a Abd-el-Krim y vengar la carnicería sufrida por las tropas españolas, donde fueron masacrados, torturados, mutilados y asesinados diez mil hombres a manos de los rifeños, y donde el autor resultaría gravemente herido. Una narración emocionante y sorprendente que describe el ambiente de los españoles en el París de los alegres veinte y a continuación el contraste del ambiente bélico del Magreb, la guerra desde dentro, y es también una crítica feroz a los militares y los políticos, que en Madrid o Melilla toman decisiones egoístas, cobardes o simplemente equivocadas. La aventura se cuenta con detalle en su libro, publicado en 1922, La Cruz de Monte Arruit. El ejemplar que yo tenía desapareció en mis viajes.
